Two people were arrested in San Fransico while riding around in a Waymo robotaxi after the cab pulled over and called the cops on them. The riders were juveniles in possession of a loaded AR-style ghost gun and were taken to a juvenile hall. While the police report did not specify who was operating the […]

How did Waymo know they were in possession of an illegal firearm?

those fucking cars are filled with cameras that are directed at you and being watched by live people.
Tikiporch@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 2d
You can't easily conceal a firearm of that size without proper kit, and those taxis are more camera than car.

But what made it illegal? A semiauto AK is perfectly legal, and I doubt the Waymo has camera fidelity enough to differentiate the two. (Cameras capable of looking it over and declaring a lack of serial number) Was it clearly custom made? Riders openly discussing it's nature?

TOS

TOS to prohibit a firearm. Car stops, calls the cops. Trespassing charges if it's a legal gun? Otherwise just a GTFO because the company now refuses to serve them, as they are legally permitted to do? In this case it's also a ghost gun, extra spooky for the cops/government, so news worthy.

Why does this sound made up, and what is it trying to sway our options about? What’s my rage supposed to be for this bait?
Madagaskar_sky@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2d
?? It's about the extension of the surveillance state to a new level? Though it's news, and the article is reporting on the incident that has created this news. Were you expecting something?
Zachariah@lemmy.world · -1 pts · 2d
Were there actually two juveniles? Did they really have ghost guns? Did this even happen?
Madagaskar_sky@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2d
Verge has some reputation, so I guess it did. Are we going to descend into what's real? Because that's a different board.
Zachariah@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2d
Yeah, The Verge is not on my naughty list. Just become jaded about the news though. Wondering if maybe Waymo needs a scapegoat for ending its business, or it’s trying to get a better reputation because it helped put away bad guys.

What the hell is a ghost gun?
aarch0x40@piefed.social · 12 pts · 2d
An untraceable firearm
ZombieCyborgFromOuterSpace@piefed.ca · 6 pts · 2d
Ah ok. I thought the AI had hallucinated a gun.
kuhli@lemmy.dbzer0.com · 5 pts · 1d
Yeah, in most of the US they're completely legal provided you manufacture it yourself. Stuff like 3d printing has made that way more common.

That's absolutely crazy.
