A comic is not merely a collection of images. It is a deliberate sequence of revelations, omissions, pauses, transitions, and invitations to the reader.

Artificial intelligence can now help generate story ideas, dialogue, character designs, poses, backgrounds, panels, and complete pages. Yet producing attractive images is not the same as creating a functioning comic. Sequential storytelling also depends on rhythm, continuity, perspective, cultural context, visual tension, and what the creator intentionally leaves unseen.

“Where the Meaning Lives” explores the space between AI capability and human authorship. It considers how comic-generation systems work, where they succeed, where they fail, and why creative control matters more as the number of generated possibilities increases.

The essay also examines the larger cultural questions surrounding AI-assisted art: consent, disclosure, posthumous simulation, training data, institutional resistance, artistic labor, and responsibility for the final work.

Its argument is neither a celebration of automation nor a simple rejection of it. AI may expand access, accelerate experimentation, and help creators visualize stories that would otherwise remain unrealized. But generation and authorship are not identical.

Generation produces possibilities.

Authorship selects, arranges, revises, contextualizes, and commits to what those possibilities mean.

In comics, the blank space between panels is not an error waiting to be filled. It is a deliberate space in which the reader becomes part of the story.
