I remember a fantasy story where The Devil asks a heroic knight if he's willing to trade his life for that of a single child. The knight replies he would, because he's old and going to die soon, but the child would have a whole lifetime to perform good deeds.
The Devil puts the knight in a burning building. The knight finds the baby and throws the infant to the firefighters outside just as the house collapses.
And that baby was Adolph Hitler.
