🇦🇿 Azerbaijani president claims former German and Russian officials held a secret meeting in Baku on Ukraine war without prior notice
🗣️ During a press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Ilham Aliyev says neither side notified Azerbaijan, accusing them of using the country’s territory without its knowledge
📍German Chancellor Merz found himself in an awkward position during a joint press conference in Berlin with Azerbaijani President Aliyev.
▪️ German Chancellor Merz: "I am not aware of any secret meeting between Germany and Russia."
▪️ Azerbaijani President Aliyev: "We have confirmed that such a meeting took place in Baku."
▪️ Contradicting Merz's statement, Aliyev said Azerbaijan had records indicating that a secret meeting between German and Russian officials had taken place in Baku. He added that Azerbaijan had not been informed and that its territory had been used without its knowledge.
▪️ Before Aliyev spoke, Merz had said, "We keep offering talks, but Putin refuses to come to the table. Therefore, we continue our support for Ukraine." In response, Aliyev stated that Russian officials had arrived in Baku at the same time as the German delegation and cited flight records as evidence.
The alleged Germany–Russia meeting confirmed by Azerbaijani President Aliyev was put to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
