EDC Sewing Kit?

Looking to make an everyday carry sewing kit that I can have in my backpack for emergency sewing jobs. Other than a needle, thread, and scissors of some kind, any other suggested items and why they would be needed?

  • A few spare buttons of various sizes, since you can lose a button and be unable to find it.
  • Some straight pins to hold torn edges or a patch in place while you sew.
  • A few safety pins because sometimes it's more expedient to pin now and sew later.
  • A thimble because pushing a needle through tough fabric can be painful on your fingers.

Wax thread thingy. Dunno what they're really called, but it's a bit of wax in a plastic jobber with guides so you can pull the thread through.

Lets you thread a needle easier, and makes it go through various materials easier as well

Already gonna use a thread and needle that is easy enough to thread. Although that sounds like a useful tool to have at home.

Note they are talking about waxing the thread to make it easier to sew with, not just to make it easier to thread the needle. A waxed thread pulls through fabric easier and tangles less often.

Don't need anything really special, just a bit of bees wax or paraffin was will do.

Oh I saw that as well and forgot to mention that. For a kit that is for emergency repairs and will live in a backpack I don't think having wax is the best idea. I will definitely try it out at home though.

You can also prewax the thread if you don't plan on taking a whole spool.

Thread picker can be useful as well for, well, unpicking things or just poking things. Some small patches, possibly self adhesive ones are useful for larger holes. Possibly some safety pins for helping to hold things together while you work.

I also have a spare button. The most... unnoticeable one that would fit most of the shirts I usually wear.
