That is interesting. It should be relatively easy to manufacture such a device at home. You can buy paraffin wax at hobby stores, candle supply stores, or online. You would have to do some testing work to calibrate your devices to fit the expansion rate of whatever wax you get, but once you've worked out a volume/temperature chart you could make different size devices to fit different applications.
