This Eastern Screech owl was hanging out just outside its nest hole.
I guess I'm already counting down to the next owl nesting season. There's just something about these little guys that keeps you coming back for more. Once you catch the owl bug, there's really no cure!

It's pretty neat. They used to have more separate bones back when they were dinosaurs, but as they became flighted, bones fused together to become simplified and lighter.
They had almost the same foot bones as we did, but their tarsals and metatarsals are all basically an extra shin now.
