The problem is that they aren't intentionally being a snitch, they just know that when they find the thing with the weird smell they get a treat. It's like how if you feed your cat every day at 6:30 you no longer need an alarm because the cat will let you know when it's 6:00, but with finding drugs.
My roommate got out of that trap by only feeding the cat after he showers. So now the cat is obnoxious while he's showering, but at least he can sleep in.
