I so feel you there. I have a couple in the chamber I've been holding off on cause of my inability to get reliable results.
I've been using eternity, which seems to mostly work for video files, I've not quite deciphered the pattern yet... maybe I just need to sing about my family dying in a shuttle crash, then I'll see it.

Using a different client seems to help, since I think the issue has to do with the instance caching the image in a weird way, but it doesn't consistently work
Mp4s weren't working for me! I couldn't get them to autoplay, not that I managed to get webp format to play on every app/ platform either, but that is the current struggle.

I have like four things I put a moderate-ish amount of effort into that I'm DYING to post but just can't since I want them to be actually viewable
I'm just glad Photon and Sync/Liftoff acutally show things correctly, so I can see other people's stuff as they were meant to be seen

Yeah, it seems app dependant. Liftoff loads in-comment pics and gifs, but Voyager just shows them all as links.

It auto-plays in Firefox (on desktop and android) and Connect (on Android).
I think GIF is more widely supported that WEBP. You might try that?

Uploading to lemmy is indeed less reliable than linking to an external source. I've given up uploading directly. I anyways use external sources.
