omg! I've literally done this so many times. My current approach when I meet a new person is to stand there waiting for them to decide if we will wave, shake hands, hug, or cheek-kiss (Latino culture). In the past, when I have decided on what we're going to do, I would mess up around 20% of the time and make someone uncomfortable.
