Stephen Gammell was the illustrator for my childhood nightmares.

His artwork is like a splinter in my mind... a splinter I truly and greatly cherish.

I will never forget the one where a spider laid an egg sac in a girls cheek

One of the first jumpscares I ever experienced was flipping to a random page in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and seeing this face. https://www.scaryforkids.com/pics/stories-to-tell.jpg I literally threw the book away from me.

I remember the stories themselves being so tame compared the illustrations. I can barely remember the stories but the pictures are forever burned into my mind

They're iconic! Can you believe they tried to republish the series with different artwork a while back!?

I saw those, it was made me realize that the pictures carried the book.

Scary Stories?

Aye, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. My first step on a long journey of horror reading 📚

Holy crap, did you know they made a movie about this a few years ago? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scary_Stories_to_Tell_in_the_Dark_(film)

Thanks for the memory haha, I remember reading these in school as a kid. Gonna have to find the whole series!

The movie was okay. Thought they nailed the aesthetic but didn't quite catch the vibe.

Yeah, I just watched it. As a fan of the books when I was a kid it was definitely creepy at times, but I kinda feel the same. Maybe it would have been a lot better if it was an anthology of dedicated stories being told around a campfire, or something like that.

Man, those books really did a number on me as a kid.

Fuck you for bringing this back to me. 😟
