If for any reason you don't want to use google photos but are still using google camera and want to have access to the preview functionality, I finally found a solution: Gcam Photos Preview from the CalyxOS project.
Apparently it has been out since 2021 and how I have never heard about it until now is something I don't understand as it's very useful so I thought I would share.
