Could be whisker sensitivity to the bowl edges so they eat the middle section and leave the sides.
I learned about this recently and we got extra wide bowls and it has all but stopped.
That just sounds like a plate with extra steps.
My plates do not have a cool kitty paw print etched into them.

Get a bowl that has the same color/texture as the food. Maybe it'll trick the cat into continuing.
