Some complain that all the fun things of the church have disappeared. The community is gone.
The church of fifty years ago was exhausting. All day Sunday seemed to be church. Priesthood early. Hour break. Sunday school for an hour and a half. Two to three hour break. Sacrament meeting for an hour and a half. Basically church from 8 to 5.
That is why kids had to leave their church clothes on all day. It was too hard to make them put their church clothes back on for the next meeting. The kids that had to wear their clothes all Sunday thought that was what Sunday was so they made their kids wear their clothes all day Sunday, when it was changed to the three hour block, for no reason. You still hear of it sometimes, even with the two hour block. Oh, it is more righteous and helps them remember the Sabbath. That is not why your grandparents did it.
Monday was an hour, often two hours, of family night. Ughh. Primary was after school one of the days. Mutual was at night one of the days. Relief Society was an hour or two during the day in the middle of the week.
General conference was two sessions on Friday, three on Saturday, and two on Sunday. If you lived outside of Utah, you might go down to the stake center on Saturday night to listen to a phone call bringing in the priesthood session. The conference talks were printed in a booklet. When the Ensign was created fifty years ago, the conference talks were put in there the next month.
At least fasting and fast and testimony meeting wasn't on Thursday like it was for the 1800s. An old guy told me that priesthood meeting used to be on Monday night before 1950.
Every month there was some kind of major activity on Friday or Saturday night. In the fall, the relief society descended on the kitchen in the church building to all can fruit together. The younger ones could learn from the older, more experienced ones.
All of these activities required the participation of adults in the ward. Basically, there was no free time for mormons to go do anything, but church. Community was enforced.
Now, very few people have the time or inclination to do anything. It is not that the leaders killed everything. The members stopped doing stuff. Then, the leaders killed it. Then the leaders saw where they could kill more of it. Now the church is a shell of what it was and a good thing to. It was exhausting before, I'm sure.
