damn ... why is there so much unclaimed white space in (north) africa? Below Tunis for example... why did no one claim the Sahara space until/ before colonization?

Well im not exactly a historian, but I'd assume the land was quite difficult for European style armies to traverse though. Back then, the interior of Africa wasnt really seen as important by the great powers either. But of course, the Portuguese technically claimed all of Africa
