[HN] Five billion phones are dead in drawers – carriers want to mine them

It would be better to cut out the planned obsolescence of phones. I have a $1000 phone in my hand that is in perfect working condition. In a few months it will no longer receive security updates. I could use this phone for another five years if the manufacturer wasn't so greedy. That would reduce the land fill.
