Who foots the bill for servers?

One concern I have with moving to Lemmy is the server upkeep costs. I realize that there is a donation option available to aid in server upkeep,

But what happens if this funding falls short?

I am not entirely confident in my assumptions, but I can say with relative certainty that despite being federated, the server’s bill has to be paid by someone. Lemmy is not a P2P service lol.

It's a genuine concern. Hopefully enough people will chip in to keep it running. I just signed up for the Patreon today.

If you’re concerned about that, just run your own instance and subscribe to whatever other instances you’d like

Wouldn't all the content go down if those other instances did?

The content would go down, but you’d still have your account. I think it would be fairly rare that a big instance goes down. The ecosystem should become large enough that the risk is mitigated.
