Yeah that's what lawsuits are for. You sue for money damages. It's how we deter bad yet not necessarily criminal conduct in society.

If it's true, then this was definitely criminal conduct. But by settling out of court, she gets money and he doesn't have to admit guilt. It's a payoff.
