Am I not understanding how things are supposed to work, or are things just being weird? I made this post yesterday: https://lemmy.ml/post/1596015
It's about the 4th post down when sorted by New.
- On lemmy.world it doesn't show at all.
- On beehaw.org it shows with 1 comment made by another user.
- On lemmy.ml it shows with that 1 comment plus a second comment I made today.
Is it normal for there to be these differences in the same community when viewed from different instances?

Normal, no, but I’ve been seeing lots of reports of sync issues with both Lemmy.ml and Lemmy.world. I think both are a bit overloaded and Lemmy.world is still running an older instance of the software too - for now. There definitely seem to be bugs.
Edit: just noticed the post you made is on a Beehaw community. Since Beehaw defederated Lemmy.world that is why it doesn’t show there at all! Nothing new from Beehaw will show on Lemmy.world.

Lemmy to Lemmy federation of comments and postings is having widespread problems, especially the big 3 servers you mentioned.
There is an open issue on GitHub: https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3101
I've also programmed a tool to compare two servers and compile an automatic list of comments that are missing, here are examples from recent days: https://lemmy.ml/post/1582415
