The app simply crashes after you press the download button. I thought maybe it's because it's truing to write to disk without permission, as it hasn't asked for it. Manually gave permission through settings, no dice.

What device/version of android are you using? My app does not crash when downloading. Using Fold 3/android 13

I have experienced same issue, didn't found a fix so far. Also, it seems like there is no issue opened about that on GitHub.

The error may be related to Android version. I've gotten a new phone today, and it seems image downloading works fine there. Previous version was Android 9, now I'm on Android 13.
