Bluesky temporarily halts sign-ups because so many people are joining from Twitter

How does Bluesky compare to Mastodon? So far, it seems inferior when not accounting for userbase. It is described as decentralized, but it is connected to both Twitter controlled by Musk and Jack Dorsey, neither of whom I peronally trust. So why is it a thing?
