It is, but when it get gets scaled down the negative space between the L and the W becomes harder to discern and is eventually all but lost. In the small version that appears most frequently, the gap is basically nonexistent.
I don't see an alien hand, but a "Lw". I agree to logo is not world-class yet, but I also have no idea how a redesign could look like. The current design doesn't bother me, though.

Well it's not a W is it. It's 4 pronged and green. An aliens hand? A radiated pitchfork? I'm sure something better can be found eventually.

It's a lowercase l followed by a lowercase w as far as I can tell.

Im sure it will change overtime. With the huge spike of users, I think the thumbnails is probably not their top priority right now lol
This instance already had to upgrade their hardware to keep up.

This logo is much better than the generic globe they had before. I'd prefer a transparent background but beggers can't be choosers.
