Don't worry your gut feeling is right. Wifi / Bluetooth scans are orders of magnitude cheaper. People in here don't unterstand how localization works.

ITT people not understanding that non-de-googled android phones use that method for localization by default, falling back to GPS only when WiFi trilateration fails.

It is a smart robust way for localization and beacondb breaks the data monopoly.

Power consumption is way lower and satellite acquisition takes time (or you keep your GPS running and warm/hot-start, but that draws even more power)

what are you talking about? GPS is far from a "passive receiver" in any sense of that vague term. It's running an oscillator at the carrier frequency.

GPS is probably the most power hungry sensor on your device.

But that is what the whole discussion is about. Many scenarios aren't just gambling because they have a degree of predictability to it: poker, stock market, betting on the day when the US starts WW3.

Probably only quantum processes are truly random, but for this argument, processes are practically random if the governing variables are not human-knowable. A dice throw, roulette, lottery numbers drawn from a bowl. They are deep down deterministic, but not predictable to any degree.

Seems a bit shallow to tie that much of your identity to reading books. who cares if you read?

The reality is that Meta is in a position of power that is a threat. Society is ignorant about it.

yes

A little bit condescencion from the high road should be considered helpful.
