I had this happen once in a manual and swapped to neutral, killed the engine, and safely exited the road (after a mini panic attack).
Seems like this should work for automatics too, but having minimal experience driving automatics, I'm not sure a power converter would be tolerant to rolling a mile or so with the engine dead.
Definitely read it as saying:
"You don't have any friendses"
