I’m looking at $20k CAD to install solar, to offset less than half of my needs with one EV (will add another). Or I can spend like, $25 a month to offset the non-renewable proportion of my electric bill. I miss out on the cool factor, but it’s the practical decision given my current home’s limitations.

My high school science teacher took a container of jet fuel, poured it into a beaker, then suited up in a tin foil apron, face mask, safety everything, ducked behind his large lab bench at the front of the class, lit a popsicle stick on fire, grabbed it with tongs, and dropped it into the beaker while everyone in the front row scrambled. Made a big show of it. It went out without even a fizz.

Then he transferred it into a small spray bottle and aimed it at the same lit popsicle stick on the end of the same tongs and made a highly satisfying fireball.

Then he switched a shop vac from suck to blow, attached some kind of paint sprayer contraption, and made a giant flame thrower that scorched the ceiling tiles. It was awesome.

The next years’ classes didn’t get the same experience. Can’t imagine why.

The new Rivian software as it appears on the R2 (and will partially come to existing R1s, and fully to next gen R1s) looks to be substantially more capable. For example, one can finally receive and respond to text messages in (checks calendar)…2026? The voice control stuff is actually pretty snappy and well integrated, but apparently requires their new chipset.

VW will always confuse me. One of the most grown up but not flashy interiors in the non-luxury space, with no sign of the same taste in their software.

At the same time, there are big changes coming to iOS that are supposed to allow the vehicle and phone to share route planning info to avoid conflicts which was allegedly part of the issue with Tesla not implementing CarPlay. I went ahead and installed an aftermarket CarPlay screen in my Model 3 as a binnacle so I could use my preferred podcast player and have chapter support.

Might have some of the benefits of the Rivian software partnership by then - their new approach seems pretty solid*, but not sure if it’s dependent on their hardware chip and if that’s part of the VW deal?

*Obligatory caveat that Rivian’s no CarPlay/Android Auto angle is both idiotic and has been argued poorly by Wassym and RJ

My homelab has never been running more smoothly and I’m learning tonnes with effectively bespoke tutorials for my exact setup. At work, if I spend weeks developing a high quality report, translating it into derivative documents (like work plans or policy documents) has never been easier to get started. It gets me unstuck in a few keystrokes with a “shitty first draft” that I can refine. But you have to start with good info - it can’t make something good out of nothing. I see value, but maybe different from what it’s being sold as.

Good point on the cameras - those are in the body. It’s where the car houses the GPS, cellular, and Bluetooth antennas (the latter for lock/unlock)

Someone in our household smoked our Model 3 mirror backing into the garage and it cost $1k CAD and they came to our house to do it. Didn’t even charge me labour for some reason. It looked very easy to do, but the number of antennas in there was something else.

Lucid is about to unveil a number of new models (already showed to journalists). They also just worked through their launch of Gravity. I wonder how much of this has to do with having hired some people to solve specific problems, which are now solved, and now those positions are no longer needed? Who knows. I don’t “business”

Mwyn is a Super Furry Animals album, and I believe the biggest selling Welsh album of all time. Y Teimlad is a real tear jerker. Cwytch is a cuddle. Heard Nigel Owens say it to two misbehaving players during a rugby match once.

The rest I dunno…

Yeah, it really helped unstick some items that were in my queue but for whatever reason never got grabbed. Suspect it was the way Sonarr/Radarr work their way through your monitored items but never get around to searching for some of them? Everything is also unexposed for me (why bother? I can add stuff through lists on Trakt, or just wait until I’m home, or WireGuard in to my box if I really need to) but I’ve turned it off. Will look for alternatives.
