Same here. I feel userscripts are incredibly powerful tools to make things better in some ways. Nowadays I don't really use any of them anymore. The ones I did use for a time was Enhanced Steam Gifts.

Nope - aware of juice jackers, so I only used my own cables and adapters (even have a USB condom).
I'm generally pretty security aware, but my only theory of how it landed there is some cellular exploit. Whether it was a crafted MMS, a custom cell site, or something else I don't know.
I did use mobile data for some ubers, but that was off-site.
I imagined them as fully isolated signal-wise, which is what makes them able to travel such distances without being intercepted? I recall reading an article a little while ago that there has already been used "Fire and Forget" drones that truly do not send or receive any external electronic signals, and with the sole directive of flying to their destination and explode.
Also, a Raspberry Pi is very capable of handling all those signals and do video recognition to the level of steering real-time. The challenge I imagine is doing it accurately enough not to hit anything but the intended target. But to your point of having backup systems, they could also do multiple layer imaging using LiDAR and IR to get further accurate positioning based off of satellite imagery. This would require a bit more than an RPi for real-time use probably, but still very possible in a missile with a one ton payload capacity.
The Javelin missile is an example of how capable these steering/guidance systems were even 20 years ago.
I'm curious how these long range cruise missiles function. I haven't seen any specific talked about it, but I imagine it can be as simple as a Raspberry Pi or an equivalent SBC loaded with a microSD containing flight path and data from Google Earth, attached to an external camera for position reference, and there you go, a completely autonomous drone.

Well, everything's relative. There's not many left who are genuinely deemed credible. Nonetheless BBC has undoubtedly a big reach, and this significantly increases the chances of people talking and taking the problem seriously.
There are many places the downvotes come from - bots, white knights, those ignorant of the situation, oblivious Kremlin supporters - and there are few who upvote something that, as the article mentions, can be used as propaganda in favor of Kremlin.
But yes, I'm glad that some credible western media at last dares speak up about this problem. Hopefully it results in something being done about it, but the other problem remains, and it feeds desperation: They're running out of manpower.
I'm one of the people who actually liked the modern day segments of the game(s), tying real world elements into the story in such interesting ways. The second game is probably my favorite, where you find these traces of the pieces of Eden in order to figure out what the real hidden plotline is.

The fact that only those with good connections manage to get out of the dire situation makes me want to do something for them. There are good people there too, who are stuck either due to fear or economy. But I can't say I've seen a lot of good treatment of Russians abroad after 2022. I know people who've had to change their surname in order to avoid prejudice abroad. This is what I feel makes it not only more difficult, but also like they are on their own; there is no support to get.
Russia probably won't become a world leader anytime soon indeed, but they don't have to be for the people to live well. And I agree; a major event is likely necessary for proper change to take place. Many of the people in these areas are (for the lack of a better word) disconnected from the war in every sense other than what the state tells them. If the illusion of the propaganda breaks, I wonder if they will at any point think "we'll be better off without Moscow"? And the amount of young men Kremlin has siphoned out of Khabarovsk is a very good reason for wanting separation, imho. They are already closer friends with China than with Moscow anyways, it seems to me.

Better than age verification indeed: Parents have a responsibility as parents of a child to protect the child. Sure, the technologies haven't made things easier, but tech solutions (like age verification) are faaar from the catch-all that governments hope it to be.
The primary responsibility for a safe upbringing lies with the parents. Always has, always will, as it should. Nevertheless, some help is welcome, like this site that has been made to spread awareness and information, alongside teachers and other adults who are part of a child's life.
I'd recommend either Peppermint OS or Lubuntu as lightweight distros for an old laptop. There are many more distros that you can try out there, even without desktop environments (no graphical stuff, which saves a lot of resources), if you're not into using your laptop for stuff outside of server-use. For that, Debian is the go-to imho. Just remember not to select any desktop environment during the installation process.
Put some of the distros on a flash drive and try them out. Distro hopping can be fun :-)
I recommend you to take a look into Single Board Computers (SBCs) like Raspberry Pi, Orange Pi, Le Potato, Rock64, etc. They are very capable of hosting most things that ordinary people use, at the scale of a family. There are many guides online on how to make a personal VPN of it, as well as host things directly on it like your own private file share and sync.

It was Android :-) WiFi, NFC and BT turned off. It was Android 12 I believe, back in 2022.
