It’s not simply the average person it’s most people that don’t need this. For most people a custom rom adds nothing, most people barely change their wallpaper.
Sounds like a really good deal. I bought the 14“ with an M1 Pro 8c 16GB Ram and 512 GB SSD pretty much a year ago for 1900€. To this day I can’t complain and even with the M3 Pro with everything else being the same I don’t think I would notice a difference outside of benchmarks.
In my opinion, this is not as big of a deal as, since WebKit/Blink is open source. Everybody could just use the same engine and just build their version of the browser around it. Firefox doesn’t need to maintain their own engine.
Isn’t this more of a way to reduce the energy to support it instead of the opposite? I’m not in favor of removing it, but I understand the reason.

How did those happen, if there is a perfectly good path running parallel to them? Does the path flood often?
