If I remember correctly, some catalysts only drop from the strike playlist, meaning you have to go into the Vanguard Ops section and you aren't able to target farm a particular strike.
Seriously! I took a break during the seasons in which Hollow Denial and Path of Least Resistance were released. With trace rifles being an anti-champion weapon this season and those two weapons being the only non-solar legendary traces, you'd think Banshee or Xur would have sold at least one of them. Bungie has to keep that FOMO going though, I guess.
