I use my own dockerized fork of news-sender-kindle which works well in terms of folding everything down into a .epub, but the RSS control is a little fiddly, it doesn't let me preview the articles and amending feeds involves SSHing into an txt file on my server (not ideal).
The ICE comparison falls down because when you buy a tune, you're genuinely buying either additional parts or labour to improve the interplay between existing parts. There's something tangible there that needs setting up

Maybe I'm missing something, but if your friend's router had the capability to, would it not be easier to just set up a WireGuard tunnel directly on the router to VPN straight into their local network? Then you're able to just access the UI through your browser remotely, without reliance on any server at all.
I have a TP-Link with this functionality. Not sure quite how widespread this is in 2025.
