Homo sapiens evolved with strong aggressive tendencies, tuned up through countless generations of struggles between smallish bands of individuals competing for resources and territory in order to survive.

Despite our collective good intentions to "think globally," we modern humans still get mired in emotion-driven group politics because we're genetically predisposed to "us vs. them" thinking, which requires an "other" to demonize.

On optimistic days, I like to think we're making social progress toward rationality and compassion, and away from our hardwired chimplike tendencies. But we all know there's plenty of hate we have to overcome.

For good but relatively cheap in the U.S.: Whole Foods Pacific Rim/Vienna Roast. It's dark but not burned-tasting. Brews up beautifully in a French press.
