I recently moved. At the old house, I was close enough to walk, but generally I drove because I bought for a week at a time for a family of four. We only moved a few miles away, but pretty much every grocery store is about 3 miles away. I'm on the edge of a city of about 70k people.
So many things we need to focus on as a country, and this is what the priority is. Or, at least, this is what we hear about. Either way, it's ridiculous.
I worry about it every time I hear about another shooting. So basically constantly.
I try to tell myself that it's unlikely, or we live in a place it couldn't possibly happen...which is all BS and I know it.
I just have to hope it's something I'll never have to deal with. If I was truly that concerned, I'd have to home school, and that's just not going to happen. So it's basically a low level of constant dread, and it's disgusting that this is where we're at here, because no one wants to face the facts and actually do anything about problem.

Every time I hear about these events (so WAY too fucking often) I think about my kids, and I hope that we never have to deal with that situation. I'm in the state, and I have plenty of friends in Madison. This is practically hitting home for me.
It also reminds me of the situation we did deal with, which was an abuser. When my kid was in kindergarten. We're pretty sure nothing happened to our kid, but FUCK. I have never wanted to beat someone to death with my own two hands before, but given the chance I definitely could have seen myself losing control.

Went for a funeral, wasn't there long enough to see much of anything, no touristy stuff at all. View from the hotel was nice, minus the highway cutting through the foreground.

Otherwise, we have a couple of light-up penguins that my kids like having out for Christmas. I could be just fine without any decorations, but it is what it is.

Believe me when I say there ARE better organizations out there, even in healthcare. I work for a regional healthcare org, and we've got well-enforced policies for security (among other things). We actively work to maintain our environment to supported equipment only, and we have more than 2 people doing it.
Some people prefer offices, others not. My employer gave us the option of where we work, and it's been working out very well. About 5% chose to be in the office, another 10-15% are hybrid, the rest are fully remote. With proper support from management, it works great.
I'm indifferent to them. I use their products, but I'm not a huge fan. I use them because I dislike the alternatives more.
I've been considering trying to degoogle myself, but honestly it would be complicated, and there's a wife-approval factor that likely hinders that. We have multiple Chromecasts, Next hubs, etc around the house, and my wife likes the ease of use. I am slowly building up a home assistant instance, but still tying it into the Google home integration for ease of wife approval.
I use what works best for me, and right now most of those options are from Google.
