Aren't developers expected to support every desktop by writing code for each of them? Expecting developers to rewrite their existing programs for wayland is unrealistic, but isn't it hard to develop for many desktops and obscure window managers? That's good to hear. Despite my dislike for wayland it's still good to see free software progress. But wayland is fundamentally broken and no amount of funding and fixing will be viable in the long term (ironic because this is the same point stated for xorg). My main problems with wayland in a nutshell is basically needing to write many fundamental things from scratch for every desktop and window manager. Projects like wlroots attempt to solve this but there's still lots of reduntant code if someone wishes to write a simple WM. I also despise the lack of interoperability of generic tools. In wayland you're expected to make a desktop agnositic program support basically every major desktop and window manager.
