on Windows is bad · c/linux · 8 pts · 38d

I like that I don't have to update anything on Linux.

I should—and I do—but I don't have to worry that every time I walk away something else has auto-updated (or decided to stop working unless I agree to update it).

It didn't used to be such a battle just to get your PC to stop doing things for its sake rather than for yours.

Linux also doesn't quietly "queue-up" background updates that incrementally slow the machine down to the point where you have to restart it to apply the changes to free up all the garbage temp files stored just to stage Copilot updates or some such nonsense.

American politician removed from office for suspected grift/corruption: "stepped down to spend more time with family".

Chinese CCP removed from office for grift/corruption: "party of Winnie the Pooh carries out yet another Stalinist purge."

Yeah, ok. Chi-coms bad. 🙄

He's likely referring to the M4A1 Colt, which the US openly ships to Israel as recently as this year..

A lot of those rifles make their way to settlers' hands through various channels.

And machine gun is just vernacular for a fully automatic rifle.

Making it loudly known that you're ammosexual doesn't detract from the point the Congressman was making, which is that it's fucking ridiculous to have a bunch of plain clothes teenagers pointing weapons that the US gave them just for visiting a village that they decided to vandalize days prior.

Red dot vs laser sight, machine gun vs AR, silencer vs suppressor — who gives a shit about the right terminology? You understand perfectly what he's saying and what happened.

US is a net exporter of refined fuels (what you put in your car), but the US doesn't produce the heavy crude that its refineries are all set up to convert into that fuel.

It's like saying you produce more cakes than you consume. That doesn't really mean shit when you run out of sugar, bomb the supermarket, mine the roads between you and the supermarket, and burn all the bridges between you and your neighbors. Can't exactly "borrow a cup of sugar" your way out of this one.

Israel dropped 10 missiles in Doha, Qatar in September 2025, targeting the senior political leadership of Hamas who were there to negotiate an end to the war in Gaza.

If I were speculating, the U.S. probably wanted the Swiss to host the Iranian negotiations (w/ Vance taking part) because they wanted reduce the likelihood that the Israelis would attempt to literally kill the negotiators--like they've done in basically every conflict in which they've been involved.

I don't know why you felt it necessary to put Taiwanese in quotes, nor do I understand why you find it so important to post--over and over again--that Taiwanese isn't an ethnicity.

I never said that it was. I said that a country does not have to have a distinct ethnic identity to merit independence or self-determination.

I think you're talking past me, here.

Rolling up on July 4th (on an English speaking forum) to make vague posts to suggest another country's ethnic identity isn't distinct enough to merit national independence kind of makes you sound like an asshole.

That's why you're being downvoted.

Not wrong, just an asshole.

We haven't had politicians who actually deliver positive life altering changes for a very long time.

I think this is only partially true. Say what you will about Obama, but he did meaningfully improve a huge number of people's lives just by raising the age restriction for kids on their parents' insurance plans and a few other programs for the expansion of medical care coverage.

He's still a shithead who authorized the bombing of hospitals abroad and failed to deliver universal healthcare, but it was nice—even for me—to get just a crumb of progress for the first time at a point in my life where it made the biggest impact.

Same thing with Trump-- I think the stimulus checks were both objectively and subjectively a good thing.

The problem is, we can do so much better than crumbs.

IMO, savvy supporters of his should start flipping these silly phrases on their head. Like:

"We're not burning bridges, we're replacing stubborn gatekeepers."

or

"We're not burning bridges, we're building new ones to the workers who feel abandoned."

or

"We're not radical leftists because what's more centrist than speaking to the heart of America, it's working class?"

or even

"Washington doesn't have a 'lack of centrists' problem, it has a self-centerist problem."

From what I've read, not exactly.

AMOC collapse would cause weather patterns in Europe to swing wildly between scorching hot to frigid cold, causing crop/local ecosystem collapse.

So first you're going to be really hungry, then--depending upon how long you make it--you'll be bitterly cold or insufferably hot.
