I liked the part where the democrats slow rolled every part of it, coming to the negotiating table over and over with concessions to get the republicans to support it, all for nothing.
I tried it out for a few hobby side projects as someone that doesn’t do much JavaScript development.
It delivered on the dev experience. I didn’t have to learn how to plug a bunch of random tools together because bun had a lot of the basic stuff just bundled in.
Task runner, test runner, typescript, etc.
I think if I spent more time doing JavaScript development work it wouldn’t have really mattered, that project bootstrapping is a one time cost and if you know how to do it it’s cheap enough. As someone that spends most of their time writing other languages though it was nicer than figuring out how to get a bunch of tools to play nice with each other.

12% of that is roughly 40M people who paid about $6B.
$6B / 40M gives an average overdraft fee of $150. Where 43% of those having to pay earned less than $50k per year.
So the numbers in the tweet dont quite match up to what I found, but the overall sentiment of banks making a lot of money from poor people not having money seems to roughly pan out.

Maybe during the primaries we can knee cap the most popular candidate with the most energetic base. We can run non stop scare mongering about them in friendly media outlets, talk about “electability,” and hey, if push comes to shove we can let the voting public know they’d be throwing their votes away because our chosen third way candidate is already way ahead because of pledged super delegates.
Then we can focus group the hell out of the messaging until it’s a completely bland melange of effectively nothing but empty platitudes guaranteed not to upset anyone. Some vague nod to things maybe getting better but make sure to steer clear of any Republican third rails, and if they make new third rails out of proposed legislation, tack hard away from it, avoid controversy as much as possible. They say the green new deal is socialism, we agree and say only fringe lunatics in the party want that and we are much happier with a public private partnership that can ensure healthy profits and a healthy planet. Sounds great, I mean the private corporations are already calling the shots so after taking all those bribes cough I mean campaign contributions, they will want to see a healthy return.
Yep certainly this time we will be able to cozy up to big money donors, pivot to the middle, spend most of our time courting Republican voters who routinely refer to us as baby eating demons (we are one well polished message away from swaying those votes, I can feel it) and the base will have to turn out anyways. If they sit on their hands we could get a super duper trump, and so we will put that gun to their heads and say “you have to vote blue no matter who” and then bitch and moan about how the stupid voters are just too damn stupid to see the brilliant and absolutely flawless strategy of our clintonian triangulation.
I find with a lot of AI pitches, even if AI was super intelligent and worked perfectly, I can not for the life of me understand what the pitch is even saying.
It would work to improve my health? How exactly? Like what in the world could it even be doing, put together a meal plan?
It would work to improve my hobbies? Again, what could that even mean. I like to garden, what would the AI be bringing to this equation, suggestions about what to plant… I know what I want to plant, it’s my fucking hobby.
Even when you pay people to do these things, like a personal trainer to hit fitness goals, a huge part of it is being held accountable by someone. The knowledge of how to put together an exercise routine and meal schedule is part of what you get, the other part is the relationship with that human, them encouraging you and celebrating your success or not giving up because you don’t want to disappoint.
Someone working on managing my house would be able to do tangible labor like wash the dishes or fold the laundry, ChatGPT telling me that washing the dishes will make the kitchen cleaner isnt the part of the equation most people are missing.
It’ll be working 24/7 to advance my career and my finances? How? What could that possibly mean, I’m sleeping and it’s doing something to advance my career. If I hired a human assistant and I woke up one morning and they told me they’d been up all night advancing my career, I would be genuinely concerned.
I often feel like I’m taking crazy pills. These things generate text. So few of the things I need to get done are helped at all by having additional text, no matter what that text says.

I have a chronically ill spouse, she saw a gastroenterologist for years who did scores of tests and a half dozen colonoscopies to figure out their debilitating GI issues and told them again and again “nothing is wrong, all the tests are normal”
It took getting a second and then third and then fourth opinion until we found a competent doctor who looked at an early series of tests that showed positive and then inconclusive results for gluten intolerance and had because the second battery of tests was inconclusive this was “ruled out” and every provider after that just took it as gospel.
The number of times doctors told her she should lose weight, or exercise, or women just have stomach issues sometimes was infuriating. I watched the person I love most in the world suffer for years with no answer, tried different medicines and nutrition plans at the direction of these doctors. I would not accept that my loved one was just going to suffer mysteriously for the rest of their life. I had to fight insurance companies, doctors, and the overwhelming feeling that maybe they are right, maybe nothing is wrong and they just have to be sick.
We finally found a doctor though that had the wisdom to go “hmm, ruled out because of one positive test and one inconclusive…. That’s slim evidence, let’s test again.” Boom, severe gluten intolerance found. We could stop with a bunch of medicines that weren’t helping and had negative side effects, we could finally put together a nutrition plan that would provide everything they need and not poison them.
And now they are still chronically ill, they can never eat gluten, but we know what’s wrong and we have crafted a life where they are happy and healthy and not constantly suffering.
You deserve that too. Doctors are not infallible gods, they are just some guy that got got a medical degree. You know what they call the valedictorian of the medical class, “doctor” you know what they call the lowest performer that barely scraped by, “doctor.” You might think you’ve gotten the works, but I would have thought shoving a camera up my spouses ass 6 times would also qualify as the works to figure out what was going on in there. Turns out if you are a bad doctor, you can run all kinds of tests and not figure shit out because you are a bad doctor.
But with Carville’s help the Democratic Party has lost thousands of elections, dozens of statehouses, and become a largely irrelevant and deeply unpopular party even against an openly fascist opposition party.
Whatever would we do if we lost such a luminary figure?!

I’ve given them thousands of dollars over the years, but now my money goes to the DSA.
But because I once gave them money I’m inundated with their awful fund raising. I don’t know who the fuck comes up with their messaging but it’s so similar for every candidate and it seems like such a losing strategy. They got James Talarico blowing up my inbox and every YouTube video with the same message “we are falling behind and need more money to win. We are sinking ship with basically no hope, give us money”. And the asks have gone from “some money” to “$5” now down to “$1” which makes them seems like they are in a hopeless death spiral.
You know what makes people crack open their wallets and spend, a hopeless lost cause. And what exactly does talarico need this money for, I guess to run more ads telling us how much he’s getting walloped and is about to lose. Hooray, what a great way to spend my hard earned cash.
I think I was mid-30s and referred to myself as a “young man” and my spouse went “not anymore” that I finally realized “oh yea, I guess I’m an actual adult now”
Graduated from Ohio public schools in the early 2000s.
The thing that stuck out to me was how different the tracks were. I was in the AP / honors track and learned a lot, I was friends with plenty of people in the standard track and it seemed like their curriculum was pretty awful.
I don’t recall students switching between the tracks either, I was with the same cohort of ~90 people and the other couple hundred students were left in the standard track. Pretty wild to use “how well did you understand prealgebra in 7th grade” to determine what quality of education you would get for the next half decade.
Overall though I think I was lucky, it was a poor public school where I never saw a levy pass (school levies are special taxes Ohio uses to fund their schools) but I had the good fortune of having dedicated and passionate teachers. From my chemistry teacher that taught us the value of the Socratic method to the retired semi-pro bowler turned calculus teacher whose infectious enthusiasm for calculus made me pursue a degree in mathematics.
I graduated though before one of the worst policy changes in recent history, the no child left behind policy (ironically my first job out of university was working on NCLB grant management software for the Ohio Department of Education). Possibly a well meaning policy, but it exacerbated teaching to the test and no child left behind just became “every child gets passed to the next grade no matter how poorly they are doing.” Replacing holding children back so they could develop and hopefully function at the appropriate grade level even if it took another year to shoving them through and leaving them constantly struggling with class work they can’t comprehend has been a massive, self-inflicted loss for the education system.
My favorite is when services will put a caption like “[speaking spanish]” over top of the English subtitles that are in a film for a Spanish speaking character.
The film maker put the subtitles in there so if you can’t speak Spanish you can understand what the character is saying and then you can’t read it because Amazon decided to helpfully inform you they are speaking.
I don’t know if it’s really taken that long. A lot of politically active Americans have been saying this for going on 40 years now.
The crushing defeat of Mondale in 84 led the party to abandon anything even remotely working class, then Clinton’s “triangulation strategy” in the 90s cemented the Dems as a center / center-right party.
I remember reading articles in 2004 about how the Overton window had shifted so much that Dems were right wing.
The problem with norms are that they are not enforceable and trump and maga showed that you can have all the power if you just don’t follow them.
We can’t pretend like we can go back to a world where good actors will voluntarily follow norms. What is needed is laws with teeth and more importantly punishment for powerful people that break those laws.
The Dems showed during the Biden administration that after 4 years of breaking the law in broad daylight they weren’t going to hold anyone in trumps administration accountable. I don’t hold out a bunch of hope that the same party leadership which continues to signal a business as usual stance is really going to change the next time around.
I like King of the Hill and I've rewatched it a dozen times.
I think the biggest problem with the show is that Hank Hill’s values are rarely challenged with reasonable alternatives. There are a number of episodes where his foil is a somewhat ridiculous straw man.
And so you end up with Hank Hill who is outwardly conservative in his politics but pretty moderate and liberal in his personal views. But he can’t embrace liberal politics because a couple times a season they will throw out some absurd liberal that is failing to parent correctly or live right and reaffirm the correctness of conservativism.
If republicans acted like Hank Hill I’d have not problem with them, but they think they are Hank Hill while being Cotton.
