I think if you have access to Scandinavian (probably Norwegian or Danish?) articles, they tend to be pretty succinct on what happens without being too fluffy.
People in the US probably won't say what they mean directly the same way you would in Europe. The biggest thing I've noticed in the EU is that, to an American, most people are horrifically blunt to the point of being rude. So if you're used to that you should be fine.
Unless you are very fluent in English a lot of American rudeness tends to be very underhanded, so you might not really realize it anyways? It's either that or batshit crazy.
A lot of what is burning is mostly just weed/brush over hard soil that doesn't get much water anyways, I don't think it would permeate deep enough in the soil to really "salt it".
Food! Everyone has to eat, unless they are super picky, maybe it could be a small starting point. There are also miscellaneous hobbies/things like board game cafes or something the whole family can do together.
When I was that age though I was kind of an ass, but it was mostly because my opinions/thoughts were trodden over by my parents. So everyone recommending listening/talking/showing interest is 100%.

Problem is you can't escape what's been set in motion, only delay it. It's creeping in everywhere, corrupting it all. Sooner or later we will have to face it collectively and it's not going to be pretty.
I was talking to my SO about it recently and we both kinda agreed you'd probably have to update the core gameplay so it would be a little more interesting/engaging but overall B&W was fun. Hell, even Spore redone properly (aka not by fucking EA) I would love too. That one always makes me sad to think about, and we've not really had anything like it since.
It's largely a non-issue in the Nordic countries as you basically have to voluntarily opt out of any government aid programs to be homeless, which understandably most don't. This goes for most, if not all, vulnerable groups; most of the help is decently robust, at least enough to keep you fed and in housing. So I don't think it's a very large portion of the consideration, almost everything is paid via mobile pay, checks (any, not just from working) are all done digitally as well.
