I had a minor medial meniscus tear. One surgery (small trim, not repair) and almost 2 years of post-surgery PT later and my pain is finally on a path of improvement. My ability to walk long distances was very limited, but finally it's back. I am in my late 20s.
Employed X-ray tech here, this is mostly accurate, but most relevant academic bodies, in the US at least, actually recommend not shielding patients anymore, since it usually leads to slightly higher doses depending on the particular exam.
Collimation of the beam is sufficient to reduce dose with modern equipment.
That being said, when the patient is being X-rayed, such as in surgery, the primary source of radiation for everyone else is the patient. Since that cannot be collimated, lead aprons should be worn, and should be facing the source of radiation (i.e., don't turn your back when the beam is on, or wear a full wrap lead apron). Even that being said, the amount of radiation is low for almost everything except CT scans and IR (heart cath/embolization etc) cases.
It's not. I was trying to draw a similarity between how little "farm" animals are valued and how little these people value horses. If the meme was about a funny farmed cow name I would've made a similar comment.
Yeah, and the Wendy's might as well serve the flesh of the slaughtered horses as well.
Dismissing serious, actual life or death concerns with statements like "sir this is a Wendy's" only serve to further silence a group of individuals suffering without a voice.
When I initially commented on this, literally none of the 20+ comments acknowledged the horrible reality the horse in the photo is/was forced to endure.
If I posted a photo of a starving child with a funny name and everyone was simply laughing at the meme, would you say nothing?
Right, but the animal would not have been named that if the people breeding these horses saw them as individuals instead of objects. "Just laughing at the name" completely ignores literally everything else connected to the name.
While everybody is laughing at the meme, hundreds (if not thousands) of horses are killed every year simply because they cannot race or are not profitable, many as young as two years old. https://horseracingwrongs.org/
To mention nothing of other cruel practices, among these forced separation from their mothers, nose chains, blinders, whips, over breeding, etc.
Breeding these animals is not funny, it is not a joke, and these breeders are awful people.
Claiming we're overpopulated is literally ecofascist rhetoric. By what metric are we overpopulated? Using too much land and resources?
Did you know if everyone went vegan, the space used for farmland (which accounts for a large portion of "human" space) could be reduced by as much as 75%? (https://ourworldindata.org/land-use-diets)
Granted, the whole world will not turn vegan, but I don't think we'll start culling people either. There are many, many things we could do to reduce resource usage (or other overpopulation metric) that would have minimal or no impact on us as a species.
Consider also that populations of "wealthy" countries tend to slow in growth, plateau, or even shrink over time (see Japan).
I do agree overpopulation is not sufficient justification for culling any species.
I don't disagree, I just think focusing specifically on meat waste at supermarkets is perhaps the wrong place to focus? If we organically reduce demand for meat, then the supermarkets will naturally stop carrying as much.
I think the idea of supermarket transparency is nice, but if the true horrors of animal product production aren't enough to change people's behavior or attitude, I don't think publishing some numbers will.
Every step in the chain of meat (+milk, eggs, etc) production and sale prioritizes profit over environment, animal and human health, and animal welfare. You're barking up the wrong tree.
I'm sorry, I didn't mean to overstep. I didn't think you should cut her off because she drinks milk, but because from the way I read your initial comment it seemed they had brought meat into your house after it was clear you had established a no meat rule, as part of a larger pattern of disregarding your boundaries -- perhaps a projection of my own experiences.
I hope you and your mom have a good time together when she comes.
This video got me about a year ago. Nothing super graphic, not at a slaughterhouse, not even any abuse. But the "simple" act of taking a newborn child away from their mother completely shattered any remaining dissonance I had about going vegan, personally.
I will echo the other commenters suggestion to get some vegan creamers. Honestly, it may be worth considering cutting them off if they can't follow your rules in your own residence. There's plenty of food to eat that isn't meat (obviously); there's no excuse for them having meat delivered. If they can't go one week (not sure how long they're staying) without meat/dairy in your house, then they honestly don't care about your feelings.
I would ask them what foods they would prefer -- give them options like tofu, different beans, lentils, edamame, etc. Maybe make a soup with their chosen legume.
I would encourage you to compromise and """allow""" them to eat non vegan if you go to a restaurant. I understand this is really distressing, but with some people it can be helpful to focus on one goal at a time (e.g. no animal products in your residence).
Can confirm.

Thanks, gonna get these to watch soon.

I am engaging (thank you)
They value the horses as objects and property, not as individual beings with their own unique experience of the world.
Yes, and horses have been abused historically. The two are intertwined and inseparable.

Same here. lol

I used bottles for a year or two and just switched to Faugus Launcher. Seems a lot more reliable at opening/closing Battle.net for whatever reason.
100%. The tortoise can't win if the hare kills him before the race has even started.
