Qield is one good option, there is a new cloud for synching. Mergin has a similar cloud sync for field work.
More general surveys can be created with kobotoolbox, based on odk and with some point/poly input (not a GIS, tabular).
It can depend on your position: if you do scientific work (can be assumed if you are author), it may not fit with your job description (lab work = non-sci) and may lead to possibilities to get higher position/salary using attourneys against your institution.
