I have seen people in the health professions who have been "taught" empathy but who can only go through the motions, - completely missing the point that to empathise is to see things from the other's perspective and to FEEL their emotions (not always because you have experienced their troubles for yourself - just as the doctor doesn't need to have had appendicitis to know what it feels like).
