I just use ffprobe and ffmpeg (they come with VLC), via bash scripts generated by a gnumeric spreadsheet (any spreadsheet will work).
The first (ffprobe) grabs the needed data from the source file and formats it for pasting into the spreadsheet, which then makes a bash script that tells the second (ffmpeg) how to make the contact sheet.
It's the similar to how big streaming sites make the video-preview images that appear when your pointer hovers over the video scroll bar.
