...But I use it daily? I guess I'll just have to keep a legacy version installed but that's just ridiculous.

Edit: The Mac version is fine? The hell they smokin' there?

Twilio has been laying off workers all year long, they probably just don't have people to work on it any-more.

It's almost like laying off workers to increase short term profits is a bad idea

The Mac version is being discontinued as well, it’s just that Mac uses have the option of running the still supported iOS version on the desktop since that’s a thing you can do in general.

Macs with Apple Silicon are able to run iOS apps natively.

I imagine a PC workaround could be to set up the app via an Android emulator like BlueStacks.

Are you on Linux? If so then Gnome Authenticator is a possible alternative, also allows importing & exporting your tokens in formats widely used by other apps

Dasnap@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2y (5 replies)

I use Linux, Windows, MacOS; I'm everywhere. I've had Aegis as a backup of my tokens in case bullshit like this happened, but it's still an amazingly stupid idea.

I started using 2 auth apps for replication once Authy stopped supporting the browser extension and set the precedent for this shite.

Neat, at least you have a backup 👌 although I can imagine it's probably going to be slightly annoying keeping those in sync now

Dasnap@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 2y (2 replies)

My backups go to Google Drive and I then replicate the Aegis onto an old phone I keep hidden away.

Can you tell I'm a cloud systems engineer?

Edit: I lied; I also keep it replicated on an even older rooted phone.

That's a pretty nice setup tbh. At the moment my OTP is all offline, using Gnome Authenticator on my laptop, FreeOTP+ on my android, and an encrypted copy stored in a keepass on my keys (literally).

It's a bit tedious to manage, but I didn't want to get locked in with Google or Microsoft Authenticator - neither of which allow you to export your tokens AFAIK

Have you evaluated a Bitwarden & Vaultwarden setup?

SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de · 1 pts · 2y

I switched from authy to bitwarden for 2FA. Can highly recommend

bdonvr@thelemmy.club · 2 pts · 2y

No, it's just now that iOS devices and new Macs have the same processor architecture, you can download some iOS apps on macOS. You can do this with Authy.

Aurix@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Don't do that for security critical things. Move on to other options. You could be locked out.

Dasnap@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y

I mentioned in another comment but I've replicated many times over with different services and fallback devices. This is more of an ease-of-use concern.

CaptObvious@literature.cafe · 2 pts · 2y

It doesn’t look like the Mac version is fine. Apple Silicon is simply able to run iOS apps, so users can download the mobile app to replace the desktop.

dvdnet89@lemmy.today · 1 pts · 2y

because it is for Apple Silicon. So, mac and Iphone apps can be used with the developer consent

fushuan@lemm.ee · 1 pts · 2y

Iirc authybhad a data breach some years ago, since then I've been using an alternate.

Fades@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

But why

subtext@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2y

Perhaps one reason is to ensure total lock in. Previously, the only way to export a TOTP seed was through a desktop app workaround. This way, they can make sure it’s impossible for you to leave (without a big hassle).

So the Android version of Authy will still be going, right?

lud@lemm.ee · -7 pts · 2y

Keeping your 2fa on a computer seems risky
