I was that ex before I broke that cycle for myself. This anon is right. Contacting your exes who are probably not in the best place is only enabling them not to heal.

Practically the same situation except I was busy/moved on so I looked at the text and just put my phone back in my pocket.

This hits home with me. I have been much happier since I removed and reduced the time I spend with assholes. Better to be alone than shit on nonstop.
