I know it's not what you specifically asked for, but my guess is that the original mod saw that /c/hockey@lemmy.ca was getting more traction and decided to bail out.

I bet you have to message the admin(s) of the instance and get them to make you a mod. That is just a guess tho. No clue about the rest...
