When you haven't handed out treats for the 47th time today:

imoldgreeeg@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

You monster!

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 9 pts · 2y (1 reply)

There was someone playing a song from Interstellar on the piano just now in Melbourne Central. It was beautiful! I was totally entranced, stopped my youtube, stopped eating, just sitting there totally caught up in it. I didn't get to see them before they disappeared, wish I could've said thankyou.

Catfish@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Nice change from the guy with the Chinese โ€˜violinโ€™ who seems to know 2 songs

calhoon2005@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 2y

Made it just before sunset.

I'm crafting the resume with a "Christian" first name. Let's see how this plays out.

Chris?

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (7 replies)

My husband has had a "Christian" name for 30+ years now.

Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (6 replies)

He's middle eastern right? If so, I totally get why.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (5 replies)

Yep. His Arab name is only short and you say it how it's spelt but hey whatever gets you the job.

Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (4 replies)

Exactly. I love my name but it is what it is for the moment.

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Choose a name with the same number of syllables, the same hard sounds and if possible the same end. That way you will respond in a natural way when your name is called.

for example. Hasim becomes James/Jim

Gibsonisafluffybutt@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (1 reply)

That's a great idea!

Seagoon_@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y

Names are precious. Keep your real name for with your loved ones , in private of course.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

They're more likely to go with Harry or Sam

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

It's really sad that this has to be done but I totally understand having to do what you gotta do to get back on the ride.

I am extraordinarily lucky that I work in a small industry with skill shortages and am at the point where they'll read my whole resume rather than throw it out at the name. Different story if I decided to go into a different field tho.

Catfish@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 2y

Blarg. Very little sleep thanks to hole in the gutter making incessant drum noises. Really sick of this house.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 8 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Downpipes cleared!

So some lessons learnt over the years..

  1. Fuck leaves and debris in gutters and putting it off
  2. Fuck too much water
  3. Right angles in downpipes can get fucked
  4. Use your ears to see hear if you've unfucked it
  5. Having no plumbing plan is bad and fucked. Write it down, all of it.

:)

Electronic_Owl@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y

Wise words friend, our overflowing gutters kept waking us up during last night. Looks like one of them has rusted through as well.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

I hate that so much. If you're unlucky it could flood your ceiling/eaves. In the end those bristle things were installed in the gutter to keep leaves out

just_kitten@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Before anyone blames trees for existing I'd like to suggest a gutter guard to help keep leaf debris from clogging up the gutters themselves and any downpipes.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 7 pts · 2y (14 replies)

I swear on my mum's life...if my neighbour is out watering today I'm dropping him.

He was out there with the hose yesterday at lunchtime.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 5 pts · 2y (4 replies)

I nearly did that with mine yesterday after his dog bit mine again for the second time in 2 years. I mean, it was a jack Russel vs a Kelpie, I like my dogs chances, but told him if it happens again his dog will have the honor of being the second dog in orbit cause I'm punting it at the sun.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (3 replies)

I cannot imagine not having a dog on a lead or behind a fence/gate.

What a knob.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

Yep, his defense was "I only turned my back for a minute" but when the wife went over to play "Good cop" to my "Pull your head out of your fucking arse you C***!" cop, he admits the dog has issues. So why was it allowed out the front unsupervised at all?

dumblederp@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

at the park, on the farm?

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Farm is different, not in public. Dog parks are generally fenced off, no?

Not having recall/control over a dog and letting is loose is irresponsible.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (4 replies)

Maybe he doesn't like his wife.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (3 replies)

I'm pretty sure no one likes his wife.

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Bang. There you go.

I knew an old bloke who bought a shop just so he could sit out the back and listen to the races without the wife nagging. She was forbidden from entering the shop. Fuck he hated customers.

TinyBreak@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

what did he sell out of curiosity?

CEOofmyhouse56@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Not much.

Locals knew not to go in there because he never changed the oil but if you happen to stumble in there and ask for something other than fish n chips he'd yell DOES IT LOOK LIKE I MAKE HAMBURGERS. CAN'T YOU READ. FISH AND CHIPS as he pointed to the board which had no prices on there at all other than the words Fish and Chips.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (3 replies)

I got the hose out today.....to fill the standalone maze tanks for the potted fruit trees from the big downpipe tank. Makin' room.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

That makes sense. He literally waters his grass and bushes even when the ground is soaked.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

could be working on hydrophobic soil. Or he could just be an idiot.

MeanElevator@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

His soil is the same as mine as we share the front lawn. In summer my grass gets fairly yellow, his stays green. By May, there is no difference in how they look after some autumn rains.

Have a few regrets not cleaning one of the gutters before last night. Not a happy downpipe.

If there's one thing that comes up in convos seemingly every time about problems with a house, it's water.

It giveth life, it taketh time and cash monies.

Watching the guy from Site Inspections it's nearly always water damage. When it's not structurally unsound frames or fake Hebel.

I just want to give a quick shoutout to the unsung heroes of Easter: Thumbnails. As in the fingernails on your thumbs. Is there any other time of the year when it's more important to have a good thumbnail?

If you're unsure what I'm banging on about.. check out my half-price post-Easter haul for reference:

Force_majeure123@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Damn you got some premiums eggs in there. Score

Nath@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Historically, my magic price-point has been $1/100g. I had a quick look at the easter stock this morning, nothing is below $2/100g. I guess I'm just not that desperate.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (4 replies)

I still haven't had the energy to go looking for the ginger ninja again, and as the weather gets colder and wetter he'll probably be hiding away somewhere. :(

Melbcat's ears are still looking a little sus. Unfortunately I need to clean her ears so antibiotics can work better and she hates having it done. I'm not managing the ear washes twice a day but will aim for at least one, and talk to the vet about restarting the drops.

I am really struggling with mood and energy.

Taleya@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Lie on back. Sit cat on chest (if you have boobs this is a big cat comfort plus). Gently rub ears, paying attention to cat grinding towards where they want rubbings. first two fingers on the back, thumbs at the front of the ear, circular motions, some gentle pulling out towards the sides. Misha gets her ears cleaned then a massage that starts on the ears and goes down the cheeks under the chin until she's drooled a puddle six foot wide and no longer complains about ear cleanings.

Downside: the little shit will expect ear rubs on demand.

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y (2 replies)

I'll give this a go! She's sometimes a bit funny about having her ears touched but if she allows it the rubs should help without her knowing

Taleya@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

it also helps work some of the dirt towards the outer ear (and you will get grubby thumbs, so wash your hands!)

melbaboutown@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

All good. Anything to help her comfort.

I rang the vet and they're not too fussed and told me not to do the antibiotic drops. So I think I'll monitor, do gentle ear rubs and the occasional wash to dislodge the spuds. And if there's any discomfort she goes in for a swab

Duenan@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y

I hope to have a nap when I get home and settle down. I think I only got one hour's sleep last night :(

tombruzzo@aussie.zone · 4 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Aradina@lemmy.ml · 3 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Second night of constant droning noise. No idea what it could be, but it's loud enough to be heard over the rain.

Force_majeure123@aussie.zone · 6 pts · 2y

I can hear it too. They're preparing the Sun for daylight savings ending next week - won't be much longer

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 3 pts · 2y

Package has moved from Sunshine to Westmeadows. I don't think that brings it any closer to me, but at least it is still on the move and not lost or forgotten.

RustyRaven@aussie.zone · 2 pts · 2y

Apparently this morning's power outage was a just preparation for tonight. I think a transformer just blew up - there was a massive bang, a flash of light and the power is out to the whole area. I saw a few neighbours heading up the road to investigate, but as I'm already in my pjs I'm staying put. The emergency app is showing it as a tree down on the corner, and I expect that I will have sleep broken by the sound of workmen and chainsaws tonight. My new little emergency torch/radio is doing a pretty good job at least.
