The original story actually takes place in China. But I've never seen an adaption take that into account. There's probably a Chinese version somewhere that accidentally is more canonically correct.
I always liked the TV series more than the movie because the series has Abys Mall the best cartoon villain ever. His sole motivation for trying to take the throne? The sultan's hat is really cool. Plus his name is Abysmal.

Arabian Nights depicts Aladin as vaguely chinese though there is no Jasmin in that one.
