I literally didn't put it together that it was FS-Tab until a couple years ago when I was setting up an encrypted drive manually in /etc/crypttab, something I had done many times before, when it finally clicked.
wow, it never occured to me that it meant file system table. I feel like fstabl would have made more sense then. although it probable would have just become "fuhstabul"
This was decided at a time when single bytes for a file name was still valuable space. This is why vi is vi and not visual. UNIX is more than 50 years old :)

FS TAB - 3 syllables
F STAB - 2 syllables
The choice is clear.
pineapplelover@lemm.ee · 19 pts · 3y
FSTAB (silent F) - 1 syllable
SkyeHarith@lemmy.world · 13 pts · 3y
Yes FS TAB.
Since when has Linux been about taking the easy way out?
Innocent_Bystander@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3y
I mean, it's literally shorthand already for filesystem table innit?
pandarisu@lemmy.world · 10 pts · 3y
We geeks do not care about syllables! We are the ones who "shortened" the 3 syllable "World Wide Web" to the 9 syllable "www"!
ErwinLottemann@feddit.de · 3 pts · 3y
Still only 3 syllables in German 🤷
irmoz@reddthat.com · 2 pts · 3y
"Dub dub dub" is 3 syllables

By this logic we should just fuse the f and s for a monosyllabic word.
adespoton@lemmy.ca · 2 pts · 3y
I just call it the filesystem table?
nydas@lemmy.world · 42 pts · 3y
Filesystem Table.
It’s a shortening. Not a shortening of File Systemtable though.
Andrew15_5@mander.xyz · 23 pts · 3y
Thanks for the information, but I started calling it f stab, an I shall continue to do so.

Same, mentally I called it f stab for years and it dawned on me after using Linux for well over ten years.

Reading this meme (a while ago) is how I found out it's not pronounced f stab
trk@aussie.zone · 13 pts · 3y
Huh.... Been using Linux for 20 years, only just learned the origins of fstab.
How embarrassing.
