'Is it not' is the proper syntax.

I hope I've been informative.

Robdor@lemmy.world · 60 pts · 3y

'Is itn't' for the second option.

there are many right ways to make a meme, but this is not it

There am indeed.

w2tpmf@lemmy.world · 25 pts · 3y

I saw a smart meme today. This is not it.

TheDankHold@kbin.social · 17 pts · 3y

When it comes to doing this right, this is not it.

bane_killgrind@lemmy.ml · 12 pts · 3y

"is it" is the whole verb, and "is it not" the unabridged reciprocal or whatever the term is.

Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 11 pts · 3y

It's spelt innit

Or at least that's what it sounds like when I say it

Openmindedskeptic@lemmy.blahaj.zone · 10 pts · 3y (1 reply)

That's because people got their words all mixed up. Back in the day, "is not it" would absolutely be the normal way to phrase "isn't it."

It sounds weird today of course.

idiomaddict@feddit.de · 2 pts · 2y

I know this is a really old post, but “is it not” is also the formulation in other Germanic languages, so we can assume that it was the same formulation in old Germanic.

BananaPeal@sh.itjust.works · 10 pts · 3y (5 replies)

You can, it just sounds wrong because we don't.

Kolanaki@yiffit.net · 17 pts · 3y (3 replies)

It doesn't even sound wrong. It is something people use. Just not as often.

"Is this the thing you're looking for?"

"That is not it."

Isn't = is not, where are you getting the second it from?

hglman@lemmy.ml · -2 pts · 3y

*doesn't

hiyaaaaa23@kbin.social · 7 pts · 3y (3 replies)

Why won’t this work => why will not this work

timmytbt@sh.itjust.works · 2 pts · 3y

Try it Shakespearean 🤣

fushuan@lemm.ee · 2 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Why will this not work.

Your sentence reads super wrong to me.

timmytbt@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 3y

The contraction is “will not”

Kolanaki@yiffit.net · 6 pts · 3y

"That is not it, isn't it?"

CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social · 5 pts · 3y (1 reply)

I've definitely seen "is not it" used before, usually in the context of things like speeches or rhetoric where someone has considered what to say beforehand and wants to keep a sense of formality. Generally it'll be part of a rhetorical question, like "Is not it better to be x than be y?"

The_Hideous_Orgalorg@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 3y

There is a fairly common way to use the phrase, but that is not it.

radioactiveradio@lemm.ee · 3 pts · 3y (1 reply)
