We are all berries.

How can a banana be a berry?

jclinares@kbin.social · 9 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Because the common-word definition of a berry is different from the scientific definition. This awkward science lady can explain it somewhat better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Z0bAxSNWY8

What constitutes something as a berry?

Still kinda confused.

thedarkfly@feddit.nl · 2 pts · 3y (1 reply)

It's basically their anatomy. If they have seeds in them, they are berries. Fruits with a kernel like peaches are drupes. Multiple drupes fused together are polydrupes like a raspberry.

Then there are weird stuff like apples and strawberries whose flesh is not part of the fruit because it doesn't come from the plant's ovary.

Hypersapien@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 3y

Wait, is a pineapple a polydrupe?

Knowledge tells us tomatoes a fruit. Wisdom tells us not to put them in a fruit salad.

borkcorkedforks@kbin.social · 3 pts · 3y (2 replies)

Scientific vs culinary definitions.

Science also says toy breeds are dogs but I have my doubts.

Zerush@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 3y (1 reply)

Well, often also bird feed

borkcorkedforks@kbin.social · 1 pts · 3y

That might be why my dog hates the larger birds.

Hypersapien@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 3y

A tomato based fruit salad is just salsa

Zerush@lemmy.ml · 1 pts · 3y

There are several kinds of tomatoes that fit perfectly in a fruit salad because of their sweetness, and yes, it's true, tomatoes are berry fruits.
