I remember that way back around 2015 the double XP boost used to stack, so you could get a 4x multiplier, but I don't think that I've ever got a triple.

I saw it twice. The first time I didn't actually get extra XP, the second time I did.
Also, if you get a second multiplier while the first is still active, now it just adds itself to the end of the multiplier's active time instead of stacking.

I got one recently when I opened all three of my daily chests. I had the bonus from the first two still active at the time. I was already falling asleep so I never used it.

That’s how I noticed it too, the first chest is 1.5x, second 2x, and third 3x.
Also, completing a level doesn’t give you a boost anymore for going legendary on a level
