It sounds like US sanctions and other trade measures against China are really starting to bite.

I very much doubt they will ever invade Taiwan, the resulting sanctions would destroy their economy.

I'm worried a failing economy could actually motivate them to get into war to divert the people's attention and stay in power, I think it's a common political tactic.
