Luigi Mangione charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO as an act of terrorism

The man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare's CEO has been charged with murder as an act of terrorism, prosecutors said Tuesday as they worked to bring him to a New York court from a Pennsylvania jail.

Luigi Mangione already was charged with murder in the Dec. 4 killing of Brian Thompson, but the terror allegation is new.

Under New York law, such a charge can be brought when an alleged crime is “intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policies of a unit of government by intimidation or coercion and affect the conduct of a unit of government by murder, assassination or kidnapping.”

So if one or more CEO killing happens every day of a calendar year, will we stop giving a shit, like we do with school shootings?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Late2TheParty@lemmy.world · 41 pts · 1y

That's an interesting theory. I believe it needs vigorous testing.

EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world · 11 pts · 1y

Aren’t we at like 3 mass shootings per day nationwide? It’s not a problem when it’s the masses killing each other. Only when the owning class is hurt.

We might actually get some gun reform

Killing Thousands by refusing to pay for life saving medical procedures you can and are obligated to pay for: not terrorism

Popping the dude's skull who did that with a $5 plastic gun: Terrorism

Sounds like stuff Russia and the middle east makes up to execute the good guys.

America: does the thing America always does

Americans: this is literally like the foreigners

I'm not American.

That makes perfect sense.

  1. The murder of a CEO terrifies the bourgeoisie.
  2. The state serves the will of the bourgeoisie.
  3. The state charges the alleged murderer with terrorism.

It’s sad, remember when terrorism meant flying a 747 into a sky scraper?

Nowadays whenever I see it in the headlines I just assume someone pissed off the wrong cop.

Certainly not Larry Silverstein. He had a dermatologist appointment!

gravitas_deficiency@sh.itjust.works · 36 pts · 1y (4 replies)

This was like the literal opposite of terrorism

Madison420@lemmy.world · 8 pts · 1y (3 replies)

It always is to someone, it's usually just a matter of perspective.

The only people terrorized by this are health insurance CEOs, and they deserve to be terrorized considering how many people their rapacious, brutal profiteering have killed or crippled, both in a medical and financial sense.

davel@lemmy.ml · 4 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Not just health insurance CEOs: the capitalist class is terrified.

One: Peter Thiel is a horrible person and I hope Saint Luigi visits him.

Two: They could chose to change their behavior and be much safer. Stop profiting from exploitation and suffering. You don't even have to go all the way to being a "good person". No one's going to assassinate the guy who quietly lives in a 3BR apartment and spends his afternoons at the museum, even if he's living off high interest savings accounts.

ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world · 24 pts · 1y

It would be supremely ironic if Mangione goes free because the prosecution can't prove the terrorism part of the charge.

sharkfucker420@lemmy.ml · 17 pts · 1y

I hope it terrifies them

ofcourse@lemmy.ml · 15 pts · 1y (1 reply)

Terrorism = inciting mass terror through your actions

The only terror incited here is toward the ceos which are the exact opposite of the masses.

I hope he gets a fair trial and the prosecutors get told by the judge to eat sand for bringing in meaningless charges.

Mango@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y

There's aren't enough CEOs for mass terror.
